Keep the first attempt simple. Let your pet choose whether to engage, and use their response to decide what to try next.
Set it up
Gather familiar food, bowls, walking equipment, bedding and an appropriate carrier if needed. Label quantities and routines clearly. Pack enough supplies for the booking plus a sensible margin for delays.
Make it work for your pet
Add your care sheet, veterinary details and backup contact. Discuss keys, collection times and updates in advance. Check that the sitter understands any prescribed care and has agreed to provide it.
Keep it comfortable and safe
Keep medications in their original labelled packaging and follow veterinary directions. Do not introduce unfamiliar toys or foods on the first day of a booking.
A quick review afterwards
Notice what your pet chose, what they avoided and what made the task easier. Keep one useful observation for next time rather than trying to perfect everything in a single day. A routine you can repeat calmly is more valuable than an elaborate setup that becomes another chore.
For care specific to your pet, ask your veterinary practice or the rehoming organisation supporting you.
