Keep the first attempt simple. Let your pet choose whether to engage, and use their response to decide what to try next.
Set it up
Put a washable mat somewhere quiet, away from door traffic. Let your dog investigate. Reward a voluntary step onto the mat without asking for a long stay. The first goal is a pleasant association with the spot.
Make it work for your pet
Sit nearby and quietly reward relaxed moments. Increase duration in tiny increments before practising in a slightly busier room. Keep an easy way to leave; the mat should not become a place of confinement or punishment.
Keep it comfortable and safe
Do not expect a mat to resolve separation distress or serious anxiety. If your dog cannot relax, change the environment and seek qualified help rather than adding pressure.
A quick review afterwards
Notice what your pet chose, what they avoided and what made the task easier. Keep one useful observation for next time rather than trying to perfect everything in a single day. A routine you can repeat calmly is more valuable than an elaborate setup that becomes another chore.
