Keep the first attempt simple. Let your pet choose whether to engage, and use their response to decide what to try next.
Set it up
Scatter a few pieces of your dog’s usual food on a clear, clean floor. Let them watch the first piece land and say “find it” once. Wait while they sniff; the searching is the activity, not a race.
Make it work for your pet
Start with everything visible. Next, place food just behind a sturdy chair leg. Keep the search area small and let your dog finish before adding another piece. If they look confused, point to an easy find rather than repeating the cue.
Keep it comfortable and safe
Use food from their normal daily allowance. Play with one dog at a time. Avoid rugs or objects that they chew or swallow; stop if the searching becomes frantic.
A quick review afterwards
Notice what your pet chose, what they avoided and what made the task easier. Keep one useful observation for next time rather than trying to perfect everything in a single day. A routine you can repeat calmly is more valuable than an elaborate setup that becomes another chore.
