The cat carrier can stay out

Turn a travel object into familiar furniture.

The useful starting point

Keep the first attempt simple. Let your pet choose whether to engage, and use their response to decide what to try next.

Set it up

Choose a secure carrier that allows safe access and cleaning. Leave it open in a quiet area with familiar bedding. Give your cat time to investigate without immediately closing the door or lifting it.

Make it work for your pet

Reward voluntary exploration. Build from sitting inside to a moment with the door closed, then reopen it. Practise very short lifts only when your cat is comfortable. Keep each step small and avoid rushing before a trip.

Keep it comfortable and safe

Never leave a cat unattended in a closed carrier at home. Secure the carrier appropriately during transport. Ask your vet for a travel plan if your cat experiences marked distress.

A quick review afterwards

Notice what your pet chose, what they avoided and what made the task easier. Keep one useful observation for next time rather than trying to perfect everything in a single day. A routine you can repeat calmly is more valuable than an elaborate setup that becomes another chore.
